The Hybrid Poplar tree, Populus Hybrid, will grow six feet per year with average and normal conditions. This fast growing tree is often planted as a hedge, screen, windbreak, or to line a road or drive. In only 3 years you can expect this tree to be over 20’ tall and 15’ wide. It can grow to over 70’ tall.
This deciduous tree will require supplemental water until established. It is very well suited to any low or wet areas. The Poplar is best suited to sandy loam type soils for optimal growth rate however, still does very well with heavier soils.
When you need shade in a hurry, the fast-growing Hybrid Poplar trees are an excellent choice.
It normally lives 30-50 years. It is wind resistant and it will tolerate colder temperature to -15 deg.
This poplar is often used to reforest after forest fire, and to reclaim land after strip mining. These Poplar have been planted in conjunction with the Paulownia as these two species definitely complement each other in the fields with Paulownia on the high and dry land and the Poplar on the low and wet areas.
For the home gardener it certainly provides beauty and a quick, cool, shade tree for new homes.
